MID-CENTURY MODERN LANDSCAPE
IDDLA’s Mid-Century Modern Landscape showcases an architectural gem perched atop a rolling hill overlooking a pond and woodlands. Our work spans both the site scale and residential scale, balancing the ecological stewardship of the 4.8-acre property with a reimagined landscape experience around the home.
Arrival & Entry
We enhanced the arrival experience with a dramatic shrub and perennial garden, creating an immersive sensory journey along the gravel path—where the crunch underfoot, the call of circling hawks, and the vibrant colors, textures, and fragrances of native plantings engage the senses. At the front entry, we removed overgrown shrubs that obscured the scale and form of the mid-century portal, reset the bluestone patio, and introduced sculptural massings of climbing hydrangeas, serviceberries, and a diverse mix of native groundcovers.
Pond-Side & Outdoor Living
On the pond-facing side, we created a series of outdoor spaces that flow seamlessly from the indoors and complement the home’s mid-century architecture. A terraced pea-gravel path, edged in bluestone, defines circulation and connects the covered dining porch to two distinct outdoor destinations—an informal, lawn-jointed bluestone patio on one side and a cantilevered fire pit lounging deck on the other. Xeriscape plantings of lavender, thyme, and sedum soften the edges while adding sensory and seasonal interest. Just off the kitchen, a smaller deck with a built-in storage bench provides a dedicated space for grilling and outdoor dining.
Ecological Restoration
At the site scale, we have initiated several ecological restoration projects, transitioning areas from lawn to woodland and from lawn to meadow. These efforts enhance plant diversity, improve habitat, and support long-term ecological health. Throughout the project, we prioritized native plantings to improve habitat and biodiversity.
