LEXINGTON WOMEN’S MONUMENT: “Something Is Being Done”
Located across from the historic Battle Green, the Lexington Women’s Monument honors the contributions of women throughout the town’s history. Conceived by acclaimed artist Meredith Bergmann, the bronze archway intricately depicts the stories of historic Lexington women from the 18th century onward. The two-sided monument sits atop a granite “spinning wheel,” referencing the 1769 Spinning Protest, and is completed with four granite seats.
IDDLA helped bring the artist’s vision to life— siting the monument, easing it into the rolling topography, developing construction details, and coordinating the work of the artist & foundry, with the structural engineer, lighting designer, & landscape contractors. Due to the timeline of bronze fabrication and the scheduling constraints of this active public space, the installation was completed in two phases adding to the complexity of the detailing.
